What is conversion tracking setup?
Conversion tracking setup means configuring Google Analytics 4, Google Tag Manager and your ad platform pixels so that every lead, call, purchase and key action is recorded once, with its source. Done well, Google Ads, Meta and your own reports tell the same story, which lets you decide where to spend with confidence.
Step 1: write a measurement plan
List the actions that matter to the business. For most Indian small businesses that means form submissions, click-to-call, WhatsApp clicks, quote requests and, for stores, purchases. Give each a plain event name, say what triggers it and note the value if there is one. A single page is enough, and it prevents the usual mess of overlapping events.
Step 2: set up GA4 and Google Tag Manager
Create a GA4 property and a web data stream, then install Google Tag Manager on the site. In Tag Manager, add the GA4 configuration tag and one tag per event, using triggers such as form submission, button click or thank-you page view. Mark the events that represent business outcomes as key events in GA4, and link GA4 with Google Ads and Search Console.
Step 3: add the Meta pixel and Conversions API
The Meta pixel records browser events. The Conversions API sends the same kinds of events from your server, which helps recover signals browsers block. When you send both, include a shared event ID so Meta can deduplicate them. Check Events Manager for event match quality and look for duplicate or missing events.
Step 4: track calls and WhatsApp
Many sales never use a form. Track click-to-call and WhatsApp link clicks as events in Tag Manager. If calls matter, a call tracking tool can record outcomes. Then add a simple way to mark which leads became customers, and feed that back into the ad platforms where possible.
Step 5: tag your campaigns with UTM parameters
Use a naming standard for source, medium and campaign, so GA4 and your CRM show where each lead came from. Without this, every lead looks like direct traffic.
Step 6: test before you spend
Use Tag Manager Preview, GA4 DebugView and Meta’s test events tool. Submit a real form, click the call and WhatsApp buttons and confirm that each event appears once. Test on mobile as well. Repeat after any change to the site, because redesigns and plugin updates are the most common cause of broken tracking.
What about consent and privacy?
Tracking should respect consent and applicable law. A consent tool can control which tags fire. Because requirements differ, please confirm the details for your business with a legal professional. See my notes on analytics and tracking for how I handle this.
FAQs
Do I need both GA4 and the Meta pixel?
Usually yes. GA4 gives a cross-channel view and the Meta pixel feeds Meta's optimisation. They serve different purposes and should be reconciled, not replaced.
What is the Meta Conversions API?
It lets your server send conversion events to Meta alongside the browser pixel. With deduplication, it helps recover signals lost to browser limits.
Can I set this up myself?
Basic setups are possible with care, but errors such as duplicate tags are common. A review by someone who does this regularly is worthwhile before you scale spend.
How do I know if my tracking is working?
Submit a test enquiry and confirm it appears once in GA4 DebugView, Tag Manager Preview and Meta's test events. Compare platform counts with your CRM monthly.
Will tracking slow down my website?
A clean setup has little effect. Avoid loading many unused tags.
